Thomas Edison’s Frankenstein (1910)

Thomas Edison's Frankenstein

In 1910, a short film was released based upon Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.  Produced by The Edison Company and filmed in three days at the Edison Studios in The Bronx, New York, the film is the first adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic tale.

For years, it was believed that the film was lost.  In the early 1950’s, though, a print was bought by a Wisconsin film collector by the name of Alois F. Dettlaff from his mother-in-law, who was also a film collector.  For many years, he did not know the rarity of the piece he purchased.  In the mid-1970’s, it was revealed to the public.

As the film was released prior to 1922, it is in the public domain.  Below, you will find the entire film, remastered.  The title cards have been redone, so as to be able to read them better, with a new score.

This is a wonderful example of early film making.  At only 13 minutes long, it is a rare look at an industry that was just finding it’s footing.  This is a very liberal adaptation of the original novel, but it is fascinating.
